It is critical that members of our community remain informed on the issues that affect them most – legislation, health and education to name a few. And in times of national crisis, we realize that crucial community information comes from local reporters. A desire to remain informed drives local content engagement, and access to accurate, high-quality information has never been more important in our country.

As digital marketers, why should we advertise with local publications? As citizens, why might it be important to subscribe? In this session, we’ll explore how dedicated journalists serve our communities and discuss how the support we provide to them benefits all of us.

Panelists:

Mi-Ai Parrish, Sue Clark-Johnson Professor in Media Innovation and Leadership, Cronkite School of Journalism, ASU

Mi-Ai Parrish has spent her career breaking through barriers in journalism, media and leadership roles. She was the first female publisher of the Kansas City Star, the first Korean-American publisher in mainstream media and the first minority to serve as publisher of The Arizona Republic. Over the years, Mi-Ai has been an editor, president and publisher of large media organizations, but in her current role as CEO and President of Phoenix-based MAP Strategies Group, more than anything else, she excels as a transformational leader. She brings people together and ideas to fruition through change engineering, thought leadership, innovation integration and brand management.

Matthew O’Brien, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, MINT Social

With over 20 years of experience in the digital media world, Matthew has worked for and with Fortune 500 businesses and has built companies from the start-up stage to exit strategy. As the founder of MINT Social, he recently helped develop a data insight engine to bridge the gap between search, social, and mobile marketing to maximize the visibility, relevancy, and predictive success of online businesses. MINT Social is an award-winning digital marketing company that accelerates online marketing results to help businesses get found and thrive online.

Jacob Nelson, Assistant Professor of Digital Audience Engagement, Cronkite School of Journalism, ASU

Jacob uses qualitative and quantitative methods to study the changing relationship between journalists and their audiences. His research has been published in academic journals including Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Digital Journalism, and Journalism Practice, as well as in trade presses like Columbia Journalism Review, MediaShift, and Digital Content Next.

As part of registering for our February virtual event, we will send everyone a Grubhub gift card for you to order lunch in advance of the Zoom event.
